Real Madrid vs Alaves: Preview, Prediction & Betting Tips

The newly crowned La Liga Champions Real Madrid welcome Alaves to the Santiago Bernabeu as they look to end the season in good form.

            Date: 14/05/24

            Kick-off time: 20:30

            Venue: Santiago Bernabeu

Real Madrid have already won the La Liga title, and are a huge 15 points clear at the top of the table. As a result, they are able to fully focus on their upcoming Champions League final against Borussia Dortmund. However, they will still want to continue their long unbeaten streak in the league and end the season with just one loss.

Their visitors Alaves will also want to end the campaign on a high, despite having little to play for. They currently sit 11th, but could still climb a few places. With just three games remaining, they are six points behind eighth place Villarreal. Picking up points in this game will be important, as they could fall into the bottom half of the table after the next few games should they lose.

Beating Los Blancos will be a tough task, and to do so they will have to keep their attack at bay. Despite rotating the lineup, Madrid scored four in their last game. This made it 15 goals scored in their last six in all competitions. They are also strong defensively, keeping a clean sheet in three of those. Alaves have enjoyed some success in front of goal themselves, scoring eight in their last four. Samu is their top scorer with nine, whilst Luis Roja has contributed five.

Since 2020, these two sides have met six times. Unsurprisingly, Real Madrid have dominated, winning five to Alaves’ one. The reverse fixture earlier this season ended 1-0 in their favour, coming in dramatic fashion with Lucas Vazquez scoring the decisive goal in the 92nd minute.

            Team News

            Real Madrid

Carlo Ancelotti put out a rotated team for their last game with the league wrapped up and preparations starting for the Champions League final. He may opt to do the same against Alaves, with the likes of Jude Bellingham and Vinicius Jr getting extended rests.

            Alaves

Alaves have a mostly fit squad to choose from with Aleksandar Sedlar the only absentee with a cruciate ligament injury which will keep him out for the season.

            Form Guide

            Real Madrid

In their last five games, Real Madrid have won four and drawn one. It has been an incredible stretch for Real Madrid, as they secured the league title, and booked their place in the final of the Champions League. This run started with a narrow 1-0 victory at Real Sociedad. The league leaders were only able to muster five shot attempts and gave up more possession to their hosts, but were able to come away with the win, thanks to Arda Guler’s 29th minute goal.

Attention then shifted to European action as they took on Bayern Munich in the semi-finals. The first leg took place in Germany and ended 2-2. Vinicius Jr put them ahead after 24 minutes, but Bayern turned it around shortly after the restart with a strike from Leroy Sane and penalty from Harry Kane. The hosts were unable to hang on, however, with Vinicius scoring his second of the game with a spot kick. The second leg took place a week later and ended in dramatic fashion late on. Substitute Alphonso Davies broke the deadlock with just over 20 minutes remaining to give the German side an aggregate lead. But with two minutes of normal time left, Joselu equalised. He then scored a winner in stoppage time to send the stadium wild. There was controversy at the end, as Bayern put the ball in the back of the net, but the flag had already gone up for offside and the play was cut short. Replays showed that it may have been onside.

Between these two legs was a 3-0 win over Cadiz. This victory coupled with a Barcelona loss ensured they were La Liga title winners. All of the goals came in the second half, with Brahim Diaz, Jude Bellingham and Joselu all on the scoresheet. Their most recent game as champions came away at Granada. They were 4-0 winners, with Fran Garcia, Guler and Diaz (x2) on the scoresheet.

            Alaves

In their last five games, Alaves have won three, drawn one and lost one. It has been a good stretch for Alaves, as they look to end the season strong, sitting in midtable. This run began with their only loss, however, as they fell 2-0 away from home at Granada, who have been languishing in the relegation zone. It was an even game throughout, and the visitors enjoyed more possession, though this did not lead to any goals. The home side went ahead early as Myrto Uzuni converted from the penalty spot. The lead was doubled before half-time with a strike from Lucas Boye, and this is how it remained.

Alaves responded in excellent fashion, as they beat giants Atletico Madrid 2-0 at home. Atletico dominated the ball, but could not find a way past goalkeeper Antonio Sivera. Carlos Benavidez broke the deadlock after 15 minutes, and Luis Rioja made it two in second half stoppage time. Another win and clean sheet followed, with a 3-0 win over Celta Vigo. It was goalless at the break, but Guiliano Simeone opened the scoring quickly after the restart. Jon Guridi added another shortly after, before Benavidez netted a third late on.

Valencia were their next opponents, and it was another three points on the board as they narrowly won 1-0. Javi Lopez was the matchwinner. Their most recent game was a 2-2 draw with top three side Girona. It snapped a three-game winning streak, but was still a good point nevertheless as they came from behind twice. Guridi scored a brace for his side, including a dramatic 99th minute equaliser.
